Ride the Ojos Negros, Spain’s longest greenway, from the mountains of Teruel all the way to Valencia and the Mediterranean sea on this spectacular self-guided bike tour.

Overview

Our Ojos Negros bike tour invites you to discover Valencia far from the hectic coastal roads and crowded tourist hotspots. Following the country’s longest greenway, you’ll pedal along quiet, car-free paths once used by a historic mining railway, crossing valleys, plateaus, and forgotten rural landscapes. This journey feels like slipping into a secret Spain—raw, authentic, and beautifully remote.

As you ride south, the landscape reveals a surprising tapestry of ecosystems: rugged mountains give way to pine forests, open agricultural plains, and rolling Mediterranean hills. Nature is a constant companion—birds drifting over canyon walls, the scent of rosemary and thyme, and the expansive silence that only wide inland spaces can offer. Every turn invites you deeper into scenery that feels untouched by time.

History, too, rides beside you. The greenway follows the former Ojos Negros–Sagunto railway, echoing the industrial heritage that once linked mines in Aragón to the sea. Old tunnels, stone bridges, and restored stations dot the route like quiet monuments—reminders of the ingenuity and resilience of the communities that once relied on this line. Layered with centuries of human presence, the region is also part of a wider landscape shaped by UNESCO-listed traditions and cultural heritage.

Across six memorable stages – and three different provinces – our Ojos Negros bike tour offers something rare: the freedom to travel slowly, fully immersed in nature, far from traffic—and far from the ordinary. It’s a route for explorers, for those who appreciate authenticity and subtle beauty, and for cyclists who seek the simple joy of moving through the world at the pace of the wind.

Highlights

  • Explore the city of Valencia and see its transformation towards design and style.
  • Enjoy the pleasant Mediterranean climate, with over 300 days of sunshine a year.
  • Relaxed cycling over moderate mountain terrain, through endless almond, olive, and orange trees.
  • Fabulous local gastronomy – don’t miss the chance to try the original paella valenciana!
  • Admire the UNESCO World Heritage Mudéjar art in Teruel.
  • Fantastic cycling along the longest traffic-free cycle path in Spain.

Itinerary

Day 1: Albarracín
Arrival day
Accommodation: Hotel Albarracín

Welcome to your bike tour of Valencia and the Ojos Negros greenway!

The tour begins with a private transfer to Albarracín, often described as the most beautiful town in Spain. Once in Albarracín, we’ll carry out your bike fitting and welcome briefing.

The medieval walled town of Albarracín offers a peaceful, atmospheric start to your tour. Founded by the Romans, captured by the Moors and finally conquered by the Christian armies, Albarracín retains a fascinatingly diverse architectural legacy.

Day 2: Albarracín – Teruel
Route: 44.7 km/27.8 miles
Elevation: +596 m/1955 ft
Accommodation: Hotel Palacio de la Marquesa
Meals included: Breakfast

Today’s stage takes you along a quiet asphalt road through Los Pinares de Rodeno, a beautiful natural park filled with dramatic viewpoints and prehistoric cave paintings. You’ll ride through the small rural villages of Bezas, Campillo, and San Blas before following the valleys of the Guadalaviar and Turia rivers all the way to Teruel, a UNESCO World Heritage city.

Teruel grew in importance as a Christian frontier town on the border with the Moorish kingdom of Valencia, and this layered history gave rise to one of Spain’s most remarkable architectural traditions. Today, it stands as a key centre of Mudéjar architecture—an extraordinary medieval style that blends Gothic structure with Islamic artistic influences.

Day 3: Teruel – Estación de la Mora
Route: 46.4 km/28.8 miles
Elevation: +481 m/1578 ft
Accommodation: La Casa de la Estación
Meals included: Breakfast

Leaving the city behind, today’s route takes you deep into rural Teruel. You’ll cycle through pine forests and along sparkling rivers, climbing to Puerto de Escandón, a former mining station, before crossing the Sierra Javalambre mountain range.

On the descent, you’ll pass through the charming village of La Puebla de Valverde. Beyond the village, the route winds over historic stone bridges and through beautiful quercus oak forests—this idyllic area is, remarkably, the global centre of black truffle production.

Enjoy the absolute peace of this stunning rural landscape, where minimal light pollution reveals some of the clearest, star-filled skies in Spain. Your hotel, set in a historic farmhouse, offers truffle-focused experiences and a restaurant specializing in creative truffle cuisine.

Day 4: Estación de la Mora – Segorbe
Route: 67 km/41.6 miles
Elevation:  +292 m/958 ft
Accommodation: Hotel Martín el Humano
Meals included: Breakfast

Your route begins by passing through the Albentosa tunnel, then crossing the route’s highest viaduct, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. From here, you’ll pedal through oak forests toward the El Palancar mine station, which marks the border between the provinces of Teruel and Castellón.

The next recommended stop is the Ragudo viewpoint, where you can admire sweeping panoramas of the Sierra Calderona and Sierra Espadán Natural Parks. Continuing on, you’ll reach the small town of Jérica, a place rich in Moorish-era architecture and full of historic charm.

From Jérica, you’ll descend toward Novaliches, pass the striking Regalejo reservoir, and arrive in Navajas, where we highly recommend a visit to El Salto de la Novia (the “Waterfall of the Bride”).

From Navajas, the route continues through the spectacular Sierra Calderona Natural Park before reaching Segorbe, surrounded by dramatic landscapes and steeped in history.

Day 5: Segorbe – Canet
Route: 40.4 km/25.1 miles
Elevation: +176 m/577 ft
Accommodation: Hotel Baru
Meals included: Breakfast

Today’s stage offers a relaxed, mostly downhill ride towards the coast. You’ll cycle through the fragrant pine forests of Sierra Calderona Natural Park and past endless orange groves before reaching the sparkling Mediterranean in Canet d’En Berenguer.

This charming seaside town features a lovely promenade and some of Spain’s finest beaches, with clear, shallow waters and soft sand—perfect for relaxing after your ride. Canet also boasts a rich architectural heritage, including its historic lighthouse, the 19th-century Saavedra Palace, and the Church of St. Peter, adding cultural charm to your coastal arrival.

Day 6: Canet – Valencia
Route: 45.5km/28.3 miles
Elevation: +130m/427 ft
Accommodation: Hotel SH Inglés Boutique
Meals included: Breakfast

Today’s route blends history, culture, and coastal charm as you cycle from the shores of Canet through ancient towns and fertile farmland into the vibrant city of Valencia.

Today’s cycle ride takes you out of Canet and along the Via Augusta through the towns of Puçol and El Puig. The latter is famous for the majestic Royal Monastery of Santa María, which houses an original Byzantine altarpiece dating back to the 7th century.

From here, you’ll cycle through Valencia’s huerta (orchard): a fertile plain dotted with orange groves, rice paddies, vineyards, and many of the ingredients that define Valencian cuisine.

You’ll reach Valencia’s urban beach of La Patacona, and from here you can follow cycle paths into the centre of one of the most bike-friendly cities in Spain.

Day 7: Albufera Loop
Route: 31.4 km/21.1 miles
Elevation: +79 m/+260 ft
Accommodation: Hotel SH Inglés Boutique
Meals included: Breakfast

This scenic loop ride takes you from Valencia into the heart of the Albufera Natural Park, a serene landscape of shimmering lagoons, rice fields, and shaded pine forests. Pedal along quiet country roads and dedicated cycle paths, immersing yourself in the park’s rich biodiversity, where herons, egrets, and other birdlife glide over the water and endemic plants dot the wetlands.

A highlight of the ride is the charming fishing village of El Palmar, where traditional Valencian houses line the canals and you can pause to enjoy the peaceful riverside atmosphere. The route continues through lush meadows and along the edge of the freshwater lagoon, offering stunning views that are especially magical at sunrise or sunset.

This loop combines the best of nature and culture, allowing you to experience the tranquil Albufera and its surrounding countryside before returning to the vibrant streets of Valencia, refreshed and inspired by the day’s journey.

Day 8: Valencia
Departure day
Meals included: Breakfast

After breakfast, our services come to an end.

EXTRA NIGHTS: We recommend an extra night or two in Valencia, where there is plenty to see and do: a charming old town contrasts with  futuristic cultural centres, while golden sands and the Mediterranean Sea are just a stone’s throw away.
